There's a great documentary from a German public broadcast channel on this topic, including interviews with the scientists and doctors researching the problem, as well as patients affected by these diseases. It seems like a big deal. https://youtu.be/G4d4DuAqXlI (2025, 43 minutes long)

There was some interesting research where they found "signs of fungal infection in all the [alzheimer's patients] samples and none of the controls". (https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/fungal-origin-alzh... 2015)

not sure if that proved to be a thing. I tried looking it up at the time as my dad had odd nervous stuff but didn't get very far.

Antimycotic drug discovery was severely underfunded and neglected the last I checked when c. auris made headlines for taking over hospital equipment and walls in hard-to-clean ways. Perhaps AI and computational drug discovery can help remedy this.

Antibiotics too and curtailing their abuse in viral-cause clinical and meat ag settings needs to be made law for the greater good(tm).
