In contrast, the greatest variability was measured above the cornfield, an area with a very uniform visual structure. “Our results suggest that visual landmarks aid the bees’ navigation and increase the precision of their flight paths,”

Why? A cornfield to me would be easier to navigate than a tree, since it has clear structure. The tree looks different from every angle and height.

And why wouldn’t wind play a role? More wind over the cornfield, so they adjust their paths slightly?

tree=unique landmark. cornfield=large uniform area without unique landmarks.
