This is so heartbreaking. Vanessa was one of the most universally respected, creative, and powerful genius programmers I had the privilege of knowing, and I loved having such interesting discussions with her about the groundbreaking papers and code she wrote and ideas she had, asking her for advice and encouragement, which she was always so willing to give. I will also miss seeing all the photos on Facebook of her living her life with joy and happiness and delight among friends, and I will continue to tell people about her amazing work and life, and share all the things I learned from her.

Here's some stuff Vanessa and I discussed about Self and her SqueakJS paper:

What an incredible loss. I first met Vanessa almost 20 years ago while she was working for impara in Magdeburg. We were colleagues until 2017. She introduced me to Cory Doctorow's Little Brother novels. We attended Hackers together. She was an incredible programmer, a role model and very kind soul. I learned a lot from her. May she find peace wherever she is now.

RIP. Her work on SqueakJS was impressive. Big loss for the Smalltalk community.

Fuck and I hoped I stumble at some point in time at a Smalltalk conference into her. But not in this timeline. Suicide sucks.
